January's Featured Shelter of the Month:

THE HUMANE SOCIETY FOR COMPANION ANIMALS has locations in both St. Paul and Woodbury.  They write:

"HSCA accepts all homeless or unwanted animals brought to our doors. We do not screen out animals that have health problems or animals that are not as popular with the adopting public.  We do not put people on waiting lists to be able to surrender an animal and we do not have time limits - we will not euthanize an animal simply because it has not been adopted.

We pride ourselves on helping people and animal problems. We strive to educate people in a postive way to help them make better animal choices in the future.

A result of our open admission policy is that we receive many animals with severe problems.  Other shelters or rescue groups are often unwilling to help members of the public when the animal in question has a severe behavioral problem, aggression problem or a serious health issue.  HSCA accepts these animals even though they may later have to be euthanized. We could choose not to accept problem animals so our statistics would look better, but then we would be denying help to those who need it the most. Although we can be busy during the summer months when the cat population peaks, we do not have severe space problems and do not euthanize animals for space or time limits.

The areas that are most challenging for us in reducing euthanasia are related to health and temperament problems. We continue to work to find homes for all the animals in our care and reduce euthanasia rates, but unfortanately there are some animals that arrive at our shelters with issues that cannot be addressed sufficiently to make them safe for the community."
